Northern Circuit Route

Overview

The northern circuit is the longest route in mountain Kilimanjaro It beings in the west at the londrosi gate and follows the same path as the lemosho route for the first 3 days, after crossing the shira plateau the path verse north near lava tower following the longer northern circuit instead of most popular southern circuit via Barronco valley.

Itinerary Details

Distance: 5.5 Kilometres

Trekking Time: 3-4 hours

Zone: Rain Forest

The northern circuit route begins at londorossi gate in the west, the same starting point as the lomosho route the drive to londorossi gate take two hours from Moshi, on the way you may get lucky to see some animals. Dinner will be served when you reach MtiMkubwa camp.

Distance:8km.

Trekking time: 5-6 hours

Zone Rain Forest/ Low Alpine Zone

On day two you will spend the first hour trekking through the last section of rain forest path beforeinterring the low alpine moorland zone which follow up the shira plateau. Dinner and overnight at shira-one camp.

Distance:7km.

Trekking time: 3-4 hours

Zone: Low Alpine/High Alpine Zone

On day three the trek crosses the shiraplateau from shira camp 1 to shira camp 2.At shira camp 2 it is worth trekking a little higher up the plateau to enjoy the stunning view across the valley below thewestern breach of the Kilimanjaro. Dinner and overnight at shira 2 camp.

Zone: Low Alpine/High Alpine Zone

On d ay four the trek heading east which passes through the garden of the senecios and then inters the high alpine desert zone.Northern circuit heading down to moir camp.Dinner and overnight at moir camp.

Distance: 10 km

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours

Zone:High Alpine Zone

This day the route follows series of enclines and declines skirting around the Northern slopes of kibo to Buffalo camp.You will arrive at the Buffalo camp just after mid-day where you will have lunch and have time to rest. Dinner and overnight at Buffalo camp.

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours

Zone:High Alpine Zone/Low Alpine Zone

Day six starts with a climb up the Buffalo ridge and down into Pofu camp where the lunch usually served the route continues East around the Northern slopes to the Rongai third cave. Dinner and overnight at third cave camp.

Distance: 12 km

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours

Zone: High Aipine Desert Zone

Day seven involves a steady incline up and over the saddle which seats between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi peak. Trekkers continue walking south – West up to school hut.Dinner and overnight at school but.

Distance: 6 Km Ascent And 10.5km Descent

Trekking Time: 6-7 Hrs Ascent And 4-5 Hrs Descent

Zone: Glacier Zone/Desert/Alpine Desert/Moorland Zone.

You will be awoken around midnight slowly trekking to GILMANS POINT, From there you will start walking across the crater rim to the summit.

After the summit you will walking down to the same way back to stella point down to millennium camp via Barafu camp.Dinner and overnight at millennium camp.
