Lake Manayara National Park

Overview

Lake Manayara is situated on the base of the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. It derives its name from the Maasai word "manyara" which is the plant species Euphorbia tiraculli. This plant is used by the Maasai as a hedge to form a stockade for their cattle. As you approach the village Mto wa Mbu from Arusha, the rift wall provides spectacular viewing. Whilst driving up the rift wall, Lake Manyara appears behind you.

What To See

The view is breathtaking, as you take in this massive lake with it's silver shimmer and surrounding vegetation. Often used as a stopover on the way to and from Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. With its tree-climbing lions, fluttering flamingos, herds of elephant and scenic setting, we believe Lake Manyara is a destination in its own right. The park is especially favored with bird watchers. In addition to driving safaris, canoe safaris are also allowed in this park.
