Mkomazi National Park

Overview

Mkomazi was give national park status in 2006. Making it among the newest national parks in the country. Although it is not far from one of the busiest highways in the country, the park is not heavily visited due to it being in the opposite direction from Moshi from any other park. Mkomazi does not have great infra-structure yet. Within site of Mt Kilimanjaro and adjacent to the Pare Mountains, it is scenic with rolling hills and arid savanna.

What To See

The park is home to giraffe, eland, hartebeest, zebra, buffalo and elephant. Wild dogs and black rhino have been introduced into the area. Wild dog can be spotted. For protection the rhino are kept in a fenced sanctuary until their numbers can increase. The park offers the option of both driving and walking safaris.

How To Go

The park is located just off the highway running from Moshi - Dar es Salaam near the town of Same (pronounced SAA-may) making it an option for those traveling to/from Dar es Salaam. The park can be easily visited as a day trip from Moshi.
